Worth the Wait: Cal Wearley doesn't disappoint

After being postponed from its initial date back on April 7, the Cal Wearley Memorial track and field meet finally got underway at Havre Middle School Tuesday. While the event was in Havre and the Blue Ponies participated in the meet, North Star was the host.

"It feels good," North Star head coach Brian Campbell said. "Anytime right now that we can get out with our athletes is a good time and especially after what we went through last spring, any track meet's a good track meet."

Fort Benton took first in both the girls and boys meets. On the girls side, Havre took third, Chinook took seventh and North Star finished ninth. On the boys side, Havre finished fifth, Chester-Joplin-Inverness took eighth and Chinook placed ninth. More than 25 teams competed at the meet, including all District 9C teams as well as Hi-Line schools such as Rocky Boy and Harlem.

"This is such a good group of teams," Campbell said. "This is such a high-caliber meet. I always tell my kids if you can place at this meet, you've got a good chance of placing at the state track meet."

Fort Benton took first thanks to the performances of their top athletes. Aspen Giese took first in the 800-meter sprint with a time of 2:29 and the long jump with a distance of 17-02.25. Abby Clark took first in both hurdle events as she finished with a time of 17.1 in the 100-meter hurdle and 48.7 in the 300-meter hurdle.

On the boys side for the Longhorns, William Ullery took first in the 100 with a time of 11.4 and the 200 with a time of 23.2. Other first-place finishers include Jace Thompson in the pole vault, Nick Marias in the long jump and Colter Ball in the javelin. Their relay teams also took first in both the 400 and 1,600 relays.

Laynie Sattoriva had a strong showing for North Star as she took first in the 400 with a time of 1:02.8. Not only was she happy to win, but just to be competing in track again after missing last year.

"It feels really good. The energy, it comes and it helps all other sports," Sattoriva said. "It just feels good to be able to go out and run again."

Another 9C school that had some strong performers was Chinook. Anna Terry took first in the girls 3,200 with a time of 13:12.7. Toby Niederegger won the high jump with a distance of 16-02.

Havre also saw many Ponies have successful days. Kennedy Hampton took first in the 100 with a time of 13.4 and Loy Waid won the 200 with a time of 27.6. The girls relay team of Waid, Hampton, Sadie Filius and Tamera O'Leary won the 400 relay again with a time of 52.39. On the boys side for the Ponies, Dylan Young won the 1,600 with a time of 4:59.8.

The Cal Wearley Memorial also saw Unified athletes compete, too. Unified are athletes that can compete in the Special Olympics but are part of the school's track teams and practice with them. At the Cal Wearley, Unified athletes competed in the 100, long jump and 400 relay.

James Leitheiser of Belt won the Unified 100 with a time of 15.66. North Star's Makayla Lockridge took fourth with a time of 27.15 and Alyssa Dubois of Box Elder finished sixth with a time of 34.54. Ava Huhn of Fairfield won the Unified long jump with a distance of 6-11 and Lockridge took third with a distance of 4-2. Belt won the Unified 400 relay with a time of 1:12.44.

"That was the highlight of the track meet," Campbell said. "They're competing and trying to win their heats and win their flights and stuff like that and it was pretty cool to have them with us today."
