Pony thinclads have another good day on the track

After finishing second in both boys and girls at the Cut Bank Invitational on March 27 to start the season, the Havre track and field teams looked to keep their momentum going at the Glasgow Meet this past Thursday. And again, the Blue Ponies came out strong as they finished in second on both the boys and girls teams in their second straight meet to start the season.

"A lot of students performed really well, especially a number of them that was their first track meet that they were able to attend," HHS head coach Ryan Gatch said. "A lot of fun, a lot of smiles."

Out of 22 teams, the Havre girls finished second with 51 points, just one point behind first-place Hinsdale. The Havre boys team scored 55 points to finish second out of 20 teams. Hinsdale also took first ahead of Havre with 76 points.

Both the Havre girls and boys teams had success in their relays. In the 400 relay, the Havre girls team of Tamera O'Leary, Sadie Filius, Loy Waid and Kennedy Hampton finished first with a time of 52.31 seconds. It was the first time those four girls have competed together on a relay team and it was also the first track event for O'Leary and Hampton. It was the Ponies' first event of the day, so they had to get to work as soon as they arrived.

"We jumped off the bus, got there and got ready to go and went out there and flew around the track," Gatch said. "That was fun because that was the first time that those ladies have put the four by one together."

The Havre girls relay team also finished first in the 1,600 relay with a time of 4:22.17. That team's lineup was made up of O'Leary, Kyanna Jarvis, Waid and Filius. It was the first time O'Leary had competed in the 1,600 and Jarvis' first time in the event since seventh grade. Gatch got them to participate for the relay team because he believes they have the potential to reach greatness this season.

"We can be really good and make state and potentially participate in the finals in that race," Gatch said. "I said we need to start working on it now and they all agreed and they gave their best effort."

The boys relay team also had success as they finished first in the 1,600 relay with a time of 3:49.85. The team was made up of Dylan Young, Hunter Awtrey, Brody Henry and Nolan Lotton. Lotton also finished first in several other events Thursday. He took first in both the 100-meter sprint with a time of 12.19 seconds and the 200-meter sprint with a time of 24.4 seconds.

"He loves track and field," Gatch said. "He's flying right now."

Filius also recorded another first-place finish for the Ponies as she took first in the 300 hurdles with a time of 50.62 seconds. Gatch believes that Filius can win a state championship in the 300 hurdles this season, so first-place finishes in this event should become a familiar sight.

"She's awesome. Sadie finishes first in a lot of things in her life because she is a determined young woman that is goal-oriented and goes out to compete at the highest level every single time." Gatch said. "She's got her eyes set on competing on that late Saturday for the state championship in the 300 hurdle and so she's going to continue to work on that."

Other Ponies had strong days Thursday. Waid finished second in the 200-meter sprint with a time of 28.39 seconds. Jarvis finished second in the 100 hurdles with a time of 18.52 seconds. Hampton finished fourth in the 100-meter sprint with a time of 14.19 seconds.

On the boys team, Eli Cloninger finished second in the triple jump with a distance of 38 feet and 10 inches and fourth in the long jump with a distance of 18 feet and 4.5 inches. Young finished third in the 800-meter sprint with a time of 2:12.94 and Jason Wold finished third in the long jump with a distance of 18 feet and 5 inches. Shane Patacsil finished fourth in the 400-meter sprint with a time of 56.9 seconds.

HHS track and field will next compete this Wednesday in the Carl Wearly Invitational and Saturday at the Lions Havre Invite in Havre.
