Press release
Montana Department of Transportation and Schellinger Construction are back out on the Lohman East and West project, upgrading the route.
Miscellaneous work to finish construction on U.S. Highway 2 between Havre and Chinook will resume this week. Crews are starting with topsoil and shoulder work west of Chinook.
Topsoil and shoulder work will continue beginning Wednesday throughout the project. Trucks will be hauling topsoil to work zones along the project, minimally impacting traffic flow. MDT will establish work zones with signal lights and flaggers to accommodate truck movement and through traffic. The traveling public should expect reduced speeds of 35 mph where crews are present.
“The Lohman East and West project on US 2 is reconstruction project designed to improve a critical stretch of hi-line roadway infrastructure. We have completely reconstructed over 10 miles of U.S. 2 and rebuilt four bridges,” Great Falls District Administrator Jim Wingerter said.
He said the project now provides passing lanes, turning lanes, new bridges, wider shoulders, and flatter roadway side slopes.
“It will provide a modern, safe, and efficient highway that meets traffic needs,” Wingerter said.

When traveling during construction season, people are asked to watch for the “cone zone” and workers on the highway. The workers spend their days working a short distance from fast-moving vehicles. While they make every effort to work safely, they count on people to pay attention, slow down and be careful as they pass through a work zone.
People are asked to remember the “Three S’s” of work zone safety: speed, space, and stress. People can learn more about MDT’s work zone safety initiatives here: https://www.mdt.mt.gov/visionzero/people/workzones .
1. People should manage their speed
2. People should manage their space
3. People should manage their stress

“As always, MDT would like to thank the traveling public for their continued patience and understanding as this significant project nears completion,” a release said.
