The Havre Blue Ponies began the 2021 Class A state wrestling tournament by sending two to the semifinals, and five still with a shot at the podium. On Friday in Miles City, both Mick Chagnon (120) and Orion Thivierge (170) advanced to Saturday morning's semifinals, while Kendall Pleninger (149), Kale VanCampen (160) and Randy Tommerup (182) are still alive in the consolation round. The Ponies are currently in 8th place overall.
At the B-C state tournament in Shelby Friday, Fort Benton/Big Sandy scored 16.5 points, Chinook scored 13 and Harlem seven. Chinook's Tyler Schoen is in the semis at 170.
Meanwhile, the Montana State University-Northern Lights had an up-and-down opening day at the NAIA national tournament Friday in Wichita, Kansas. Isaac Bartel did cruise to the 197-pound semifinals, becoming an All-American for the fourth straight year. However, Nick Kunz' bid to win back-to-back national championships ended in the quarterfinals. Kunz and Chase Short (174) are still alive to earn All-American honors, while Northern is currently tied for 12th overall.
