BOX ELDER - Box Elder took it to Hays Lodge-Pole early in their meeting on Tuesday night at The Den in Box Elder.
The Lady Bears put the clamps on the Thunderbirds' offense as they raced out to a 21-0 lead and cruised to a 92-52 win to open up the District 9C Girls Basketball Tournament.
"We came out tough. That's what we want to do, stick to our defense, make them turn the ball over," said Box Elder head coach Jerome Gopher.
On the offensive end, the Bears were led by Angela Gopher with her 37 points. She shot 7-for-12 from the field, with four of those field goals coming from the 3-point line. She also made the Thunderbirds pay for sending her to the free throw line as she went 11-for-13.
Other contributors for the Bears include Mariah Arkinson, Kyla Momberg and Breanna Bacon, who all chipped in 11 points. Ella Messerly led the Thunderbirds with 16 points and Sierra Chandler chipped in 15 points in the losing effort.
The Bears came into the game 8-6 and 7-6 in the conference, making them the No. 4 seed in the 9C Tournament. The Thunderbirds were the No. 5 seed after they went 5-8 and 4-7 in conference play.
With the loss, HLP will host Big Sandy in a loser-out game tonight in Hays. The Lady Bears will advance in the 9C Tournament to face No. 1 seed Fort Benton. Even though the Longhorns are undefeated in conference play, Coach Gopher looks forward to playing them and hopes to bring the same defensive energy his team had against HLP.
"We had one close game with Fort Benton this year and we just wanted to play them again," Jerome Gopher said. "We got to keep up our defensive intensity right from the start of the game and just keep it going."
The Bears will face the Longhorns at the Havre High School Gymnasium on Thursday at 10:30 a.m.
