Season Complete: Ice hawks prepare for state

The Havre Ice Hawks high school hockey team was supposed to have the week before the Big Sky League State Tournament off, but COVID-19 always seems to get in the way. So before the Ice Hawks could turn their attention to this week's state tourney, they had two more home games.

Havre hosted the Helena Bighorns inside the Havre Ice Dome twice Friday, as makeup games for cancellations earlier in the season.

The first game was as exciting as it gets. The Ice Hawks and Bighorns skated to a 2-2 draw with the game not being settled after an extra period. Tavish McLean gave Havre a 1-0 lead after the first period, and Kaine Black put the Ice Hawks up 2-0 in the second. Helena scored once in the second and the game-tying goal at the 12:57 mark of the third period. In overtime, neither team found the net, as Havre goalie Clara Holland stopped 19 Helena shots.

As exciting as the first game was, the Ice Hawks didn't fare as well in he rematch. Helena scored in bunches in the second game to win 8-2, and the Ice Hawks got goals from Ciaran Courtnage and Connor Moomey.

Havre's regular season ended with an 8-11-1 overall record. The Ice Hawks will now get ready to battle Helena, Missoula, Bozeman, Flathead and Miles City in the Big Sky League State Tournament Friday through Sunday in Whitefish.
