The road was once again unkind to the Montana State University-Northern volleyball team, as they continued the start to the special spring season.
Northern was swept by Carroll College in a pair of matches this past weekend in Helena.
On Friday night, the Skylights gave the first-place fighting Saints a good battle, as they fell 3-1, by scores of 25-18, 25-20, 22-25 and 25-21. The Skylights hit a solid .153 and got 18 kills by Rylee Burmester and 13 from Elissa Lind. Shania Neubauer also had 28 digs, though the Carroll offense was stellar, hitting .253.
The rematch Saturday afternoon, however, saw the Saints sweep the Skylights by scores of 25-20, 25-19 and 25-21. Each set was close and the Skylights did hit .150. But defense proved to be the difference as Northern had just four blocks to Carroll's eight, while the Saints hit .288. Lind led the Skylights with 13 kills while Neubauer had 15 digs and Tammy Maddock tallied one solo block.
The losses dropped Northern to 1-5 in conference play. The Skylights return home to host arch rival Providence Friday and Saturday in the Armory Gymnasium.
