The Havre Blue Ponies knew their road trip to Sidney would be a tough one. After all, they were taking on a juggernaut in the form of the Sidney Eagles, as well as another Eastern A rival, the Miles City Cowboys.
And tough was exactly what the two duals turned out to be Saturday afternoon as the Ponies dropped their dual with the Cowboys 42-22, and 61-9 against the top-ranked Eagles.
Against third-ranked Miles City, the Ponies, ranked fifth in the newest Class A coaches poll, got pins from Riley Pleninger (138), Kale VanCampen (160) and Orion Thivierge (170), but the victories weren’t enough to keep up with the Cowboys, who tied Havre for third place at last year’s state tourney.
The Ponies then moved on to their dual with powerhouse Sidney, and as they have done all season long, the Eagles dominated. Mick Chagnon won a big match at 120 pounds for the Ponies, with a pin over second-ranked Kolby Hutzenbiler, while Thivierge also beat top-ranked rival Dylan Lutz at 170. As good as those wins were, however, the Ponies lost seven matches by pin to the mighty Eagles.
The Ponies will wrap up their regular season this weekend with matches against Laurel Friday and Lewistown and Central Saturday at the HHS gymnasium.
