Finding swim meets was not easy for the Havre Blue Ponies, or any other teams during this pandemic dominated winter sports season.
And yet, the Blue Ponies are making the most of it.
In the first month of the swimming season, the Ponies have hosted two meets, participated in two virtual meets, and traveled to their first way meet last weekend in Columbia Falls.
Now, the Ponies get to swim at home once against, as Columbia Falls and Whitefish come to the Havre Community Pool on Saturday. The Ponies have seen the Bulldogs and Wildcats at last weekend's Cat-Dog Meet in Columbia Falls, so, they're familiar with the competition.
However, more importantly, Havre is familiar with, and loves to swim in the home pool. And in 2021, the Ponies have been swimming really well there.
The Havre girls have been led by a variety of swimmers this season, including veterans Kobi Burchard and Megan Miller, both of whom have excellent times in different events this season. Kyla Burchard has also come on strong this winter, as has Morgan Flammond and Aliviah Pratt.
Team-wise, the Ponies have also been good this season, and its due not only to talent, but also depth. In the relays, where the Havre girls are always strong, the Ponies have the 8th-best time in Montana in the 400 freestyle relay.
The Havre boys have been strong, too. Hiram Cammon has been a very versatile swimmer for the Ponies, while Carson Sandstrom is outstanding in multiple events. Brigham Blackwell is a top butterfly swimmer, and the emergence of Conner McKay and Chase Mariani have given the Ponies a big boost in the water this year.
And Havre will look to keep that boost going when the Ponies host their third home meet of the season Saturday at Noon. Fans are not allowed into the pool for swim meets this season, but, the meets can be viewed on the NFHS Network.
