Pony swimmers compete in first virtual meet, honor seniors

The Havre High swim teams started the season with two normal meets inside the Havre Community Pool. But, at some point, the Blue Ponies also knew they were going to enter something new, and unique to 2021, a virtual meet.

That meet came Friday night when the Ponies swam in their pool, but against Great Falls High and CMR, who swam their portion of the meet in Great Falls. At the end, the scores and times were tallied up, and a computer spit out the results. Yes, these are the days of competing in sports in a global pandemic.

Still, swimming is swimming, and the Ponies did that Friday night. The Havre girls finished with 107 points against the Bison and Rustlers, while the Pony boys scored 57.

Indivisually, the Pony girls got a sixth from Kyla Burchard in the 200 freestyle, a fourth by Morgan Miller in the 200 individual medley, a fifth by Morgan Flammond and a seventh by Nina Flores in the 50 free, a fourth by Kobi Burchard, a sixth by Miller and a seventh by Flammond in 100 free, a fourth by Aliviah Pratt and a sixth by Grace Crantz in the 500 free, a third by Kyla Burchard in the 100 backstroke, and a fourth from Kobi Burchard and a fifth place from Pratt in the 100 breaststroke.

The HHS relay teams also placed third and sixth in the 200 medley, second and sixth the 200 free and fourth and sixth in the 400 free.

The Havre boys also had their moments Friday night.

Hiram Cammon placed fifth in the 200 free and sixth in the 100 free, Carson Sandstrom took fourth in the 200 IM and fourth in the 100 free, Brigham Blackwell placed third and Chase Mariani seventh in the 50 free, while Blackwell also to0ok seventh in the 100 backstroke and Conner McKay finished fourth in the 100 breaststroke.

In the relays, the Ponies finished fourth in the 200 medley and third in the 200 free.

Of course, the meet wasn’t just swimming for the Ponies. They also honored their seniors during the meet.

“Senior Megan Miller volunteered for the 200 individual medley as one of her senior events, and looked every bit the experienced swimmer we need her to be. Megan is a pleasure to coach and an absolute joy to watch swim. I’ve been fortunate to coach her for the last four years,” HHS head coach Bill Kilgore said. “Senior Morgan Flammond joined our program four years ago and could barely swim, but with hard work, determination and a fantastic attitude, she has become one of the fastest freestyle sprinters in our division. Senior Brigham ‘Big Ham’ Blackwell was a welcome addition to our team last year and has continued to be a major contributor for our team. Big Ham is a true leader of our team with a great attitude, never complains and accepts any challenge with a smile.

“Senior Kobi Burchard has really stepped up this year and is unquestionably a leader of this team,” Kilgore continued. “Her work ethic and competitive spirit will no doubt leave their mark on this team. Senior Lennon Herdina has struggled with injury since she began her swim career last year, but is courageously fighting through the pain in an effort to contribute to the team. Senior Saranina Flores has definitely left her mark as a sprint freestyler and brings a bright, positive attitude to the team. It’s a pleasure to watch Saranina in a close race and watch her dig deep into herself and find the little bit extra that’s needed to beat the swimmer next to her.”

The Blue Ponies are back in the water in Columbia Falls this Saturday.
