Hi-Line girls BB: 9C girls play their first full week of hoops

The first full week of high school girls basketball on the Hi-Line began early. Tuesday night saw a slew of local games as the delayed season finally got underway.

In Rudyard, the North Star girls took care of arch rival Chester-Joplin-Inverness, 78-30. The Knights started strong and then cruised to victory.

Sophomore Laynie Sattoriva led the Knights with 23 points, nine rebounds, seven steals and five assists. Freshman Kira King added 11 points for North Star. Aaliyah Staniford had four points and five rebounds for CJI.

Tuesday night also saw Chinook make a sparkling season debut as the Sugarbeeters stunned defending District 2B champion Harlem, 57-53. Chinook trailed 29-23 at halftime, but the Beeters outscored the Wildcats 14-2 in the final eight minutes of the game.

Hallie Neubauer scored 21 points and Allison Powell added 18 for the Beeters, while Taya Trottier poured in 29 for the Wildcats.

Also on Tuesday, the Hays-Lodge Pole Thunderbirds bounced back from a loss to Turner last week with a resounding win over Class B Poplar. The T-Birds beat the Indians 62-48 with 15 points from Jayden Chandler and 12 by Ella Messerly.

Action continues Thursday night when Fort Benton took on DGS in a Northern C showdown, and the defending champs cruised to a 75-34 win. The Longhorns outscored the Bearkats 29-7 in the first quarter and never looked back.

Rocky Boy also opened its season Thursday night, but the Cut Bank Wolves were too much for the Morning Stars in a 69-38 win. Cut Bank scored 32 points in the first half and the Morning Stars never recovered. Senior Kirsten LaMere did score 14 points for the Morning Stars. The Morning Stars also fell to 1B power Fairfield Friday night, 48-23. The Eagles led 17-5 after one and Rocky Boy couldn't catch up. Kirsten LaMere again paced the Morning Stars.

In District 9C action Friday night, Turner improved to 2-0 with a 68-58 win over Box Elder. The Tornadoes trailed by one at the half, but a 24-9 run to end the game salted the win. Shyan Krass poured in 35 points for the Tornadoes, while Angela Gopher scored 14 points and Kyla Momberg scored 11 for the Bears.

In another big 9C game Friday night, Fort Benton outlasted North Star 49-36 in Rudyard. The Longhorns led 26-14 at the half and maintained a double-digit lead throughout. Aspen Giese and Ashlee Wang each scored 14 points for the Longhorns, while Jade Wendland put in 10 points for the Knights.

The Chester-Joplin-Invenress Hawks also won big Friday night as they beat Big Sandy 67-20. Tatum Hull poured in 26 points for the Hawks, while Madison Terry led the Pioneers with seven.

The first full week of 9C basketball continued with Chinook getting back to its winning ways against Big Sandy. The Suagrbeeters trounced the Pioneers 58-9, with the Beeters outscoring the Pioneers 34-3 in the first half. Hallie Neibauer and Jayden Miller scored 14 points each for the Beeters,

Back on Friday night, Chinook was in Hays for a 9C showdown, but it was the Thunderbirds who prevailed 48-35. Allison Powell led Chinook in the loss with 12 points.

HLP wasn't as fortunate Saturday night however. The T-Birds ran into Fort Benton, where the Longhorns dominated 75-25 behind 19 points from Emerson Giese and 16 more from Aspen Giese.

While CJI was victorious Friday night, the Hawks couldn't get by undefeated Turner Saturday, as the Tornadoes rolled to a 72-37 win. Turner started the game on a 22-8 run, and got 35 points from Shyan Krass, while Dakota Krass chipped in with 16.

The North Star Knights also won a key 9C showdown Saturdsay night, edging Box Box Elder 62-57. In the exciting game which went right down to the wire, the Knights were paced by Jade Wendland's 18 points, while Kaitlyn Domire chipped in with 11. Annalise Johnson scored a game-high 23 points for the Bears.

Harlem also grabbed a big win Saturday night, as the Wildcats edged arch rival Wolf Point 61-58 to stay unbeaten in the 2B. Harlem led 30-26 at the break, and increased the lead in the third quarter, only to see the Wolves nearly come all the way back. Taya Trottier scored 19 points and Gabi Bell added 17 for the Wildcats.
