Hi-Line school hoops is finally underway

Area teams need to send in results to the Havre Daily News each weekend

There weren't many games on the slate this past weekend. But, high school basketball on the Hi-Line is underway.

The delayed season due to COVID-19 was allowed to start last Saturday and many area squads took to the hardwood for the first time.

On the boys side, the Turner Tornadoes opened the new season with a 66-58 win over the Hays-Lodge Pole Thunderbirds in District 9C action. Shane Kimmel led all scorers in the game for the now 1-0 Tornadoes.

Also in action in the 9C last Saturday was the defending champion Fort Benton Longhorns, who throttled the Big Sandy Pioneers, 79-33. The matchup was also a rematch of last year's Northern C championship game.

In Class B action, Saturday night, the Harlem boys also opened their season with a 78-59 win at Cut Bank. In the Northern B affair, Harlem's R.J. Ramone led all scorers.

Three girls games were also played last weekend, with the Harlem girls opening the season with a dominant 79-57 win over Cut Bank, while in the 9C, three-time defending champion Fort Benton crushed the Big Sandy Pioneers, 87-15.

Also in the 9C last Saturday, Turner opened the season with a 58-43 win over Hays-Lodge Pole. Shyan Krass had 19 points and Brooke Reed had 15 for the Tornadoes, while Ella Messerly had 19 points and Nashone Shambo chipped in with 11 points for the T-Birds, in a game of two of the top three teams from the 9C last season.

This week now marks the first full week of area basketball with tons of 9C and Class B games on tap.

The Havre Daily News would like to take this time to remind all area athletic directors and coaches to please send in box scores, whether at home or away upon the conclusion of each of your games. Results, photos of the scorebook, or any other program in which we receive results will help us make sure your teams are included in our weekly Hi-Line Roundups, which run on every Tuesday throughout the winter sports season.

Also of note, having results and statistics each week from your games gives us a chance to nominate your players for our weekly Hi-Line Athlete of the week, as well as our year-end All Hi-Line Boys and Girls Team.

All results can be sent to HDN sports editor George Ferguson at gferguson@havredailynews.com and or gfergusongriz@gmail.com.
