Pony swimmers make a splash

It was a long time coming. And, the season is going to be unlike any other. And still, the Havre Blue Ponies were excited to make a splash in the pool.

Havre hosted the Class A Meet Saturday, welcoming Billings Central and Hardin for a triangular at the Havre Community Pool to kickoff the 2021 swimming season. The Blue Pony boys finished third with 106 points, and the HHS girls were second with 82. Central, always a Class A swimming power, swept the boys and girls meets.

On the girls side, Pony senior Kobi Burchard was as strong as ever, finishing second in both the 50-meter freestyle and the 100 butterfly. Morgan Flammond also finished second in the 200 free and fifth in the 100 breaststroke, while Megan Miller placed second in the 100 free and fifth in the 50 free. Kyla Burchard swam well for HHS, as well, with a third in the 200 Individual Medley and a second in the 100 backstroke, while Aliviah Pratt took third in the 100 butterfly. In the relays, Havre got second in the 200 free, third in the 200 medley and fourth in the 400 free.

"We are fortunate to have very strong leadership from our senior girls," HHS head coach Bill Kilgore said. "Moving forward, and as the season starts to find a routine, I believe that will help us immensely. Kobi Burchard has really come on strong this year with a great attitude and willingness to work hard for the team and it showed in her 100 butterfly.

Individually, the Havre boys had some strong swims, too.

Connor McKay placed third in the 200 free and fourth in the 100. Hiram Cammon took second in the 100 free and third in the 100 breaststroke, while Brigham Blackwell placed second in the 400 free and fourth in the 50 free. In the relays, Havre finished second in both the 200 medley and the 400 free, and third in the 200 free.

" Our boys' team is low on numbers this year, and even more so for this meet. Senior Brigham Blackwell lead the way with strong performances in the 50 free and the 400 free turning in strong performances in both, but really looked good in the 400," Kilgore said. "One of our gutsiest swimmers, Hiram Cammon, willed his way to a second place finish in the 100 butterfly, arguably one of our most difficult events. Hiram gave everything he had in that race and showed what a true believer in teamwork is about. Chase Mariani swam as hard as I've ever seen someone swim and scored much needed points for our boys' team to elevate us over Hardin. Conner McKay is just building on his success from last year and continues to impress me with his willingness to work and his great attitude."

The Ponies added a home meet against Polson and East Helena, two new swims programs for this Saturday. The meet will start at noon in the Havre Community Pool.

"I try to stress teamwork over self and this team has that in spades," Kilgore said. "I credit our veteran swimmers for bringing that attitude and selfless dedication to accomplish that goal."
