The Havre Ice Hawks played a pair of close games against the Bozeman Ice Dogs this past weekend at home. Unfortunately, the Ice Hawks came up just shy in both contests.
Havre played host to Bozeman Saturday night and Sunday morning at the Havre Ice Dome, where the Ice Dogs swept Havre, dropping the Ice Hawks to 0-4 on the young high school hockey season.
The Ice Hawks didn't go down without a fight, however.
Havre lost Saturday night's contest in overtime, 4-3 as the Ice Dogs scored the game-wiinning goal 2:29 into the extra frame. Havre had led 3-2 late in the third, but the Ice Dogs scored the equalizer to send it into overtime.
Bozeman led 1-0 after the first period, but Jacob Herring scored on a Tavish McLean assist to tie it up in the second period. Bozeman took the lead back before the end of the second, but McLean scored back-to-back goals in the third to put Havre ahead.
Despite the loss, Havre's offense was stellar, out-shooting Bozeman 41-29. Havre goalie Clara Holland also saved 35 of 29 Bozeman shots.
The two teams returned to the Ice Dome Sunday for the rematch, where Bozeman eked out a 5-4 win.
Havre again out-shot the Ice Dogs and McLean scored early to put Havre up 1-0. Bozeman scored four straight goals before Conner Moomey found the back of the net late in the second period on assists from Theron Peterson and Stephen Preputin to pull Havre to within 4-2. Then, in the third period, Preputin scored twice, with assists coming from Herring and Peterson to tie the game up before the Ice Dogs scored the game-winning goal at the 1:22 mark. Holland was again tough in net for Havre, stopping 24 shots.
Havre will be back at home Dec. 4-5 to host the Missoula Bruins.
