Havre High's Josh Warp is a three-sport standout for the Blue Ponies, playing golf in the fall, basketball in the winter and tennis in the spring. In fact, Warp has excelled at all three, earning All-Conference honors in all three sports, and just this fall, earning Class A All-State honors on the links.
Most of the time, athletes have to narrow their sports down to one when they get to college, but not Warp. Instead, he'll play two sports starting next year at the University of Providence in Great Falls.
Tuesday, Warp signed with both the UP golf and basketball programs.
"I chose Providence because they gave me the opportunity to play both sports, golf and basketball," Warp said. "I like the coaches there, it's fairly close to home, and it's just a school that fits me well with what I want to do."
Warp recently wrapped up a four-year golf career for the Blue Ponies, where he was varsity all four seasons, and where it all culminated with a fifth-place finish at last month's Class A state tournament in Butte.
"Josh will fit in nicely with our team," golf head coach Spencer Williams said in a UP press release. "He's such a respectable young man that has the work ethic to be successful both on and off the golf course. I'm looking forward to coaching him."
On the hardwood, Warp is about to enter his third year of varsity basketball, and in his junior campaign, was a double-digit scorer and one of the top 3-point shooters in the state on his way to Northeast A All-Conference accolades.
"Josh is a pure three-point shooter with great ball handling skills and a very high basketball IQ," UP head coach Steve Keller said. "He is a hard worker on and off the floor. We are excited he has joined our Argo family."
Warp is not only an outstanding athlete, he's also a 4.0 student at HHS, was named Academic All-State all four years of high school and is a member of the National Honor Society. He plans to study accounting at Providence.
"I plan to major in accounting, so we'll see how that goes," Warp said. "I wanted to go into something that's needed in the world not just a major that'll get me through college. I think majoring in accounting will set me up with a reliable job after I'm done with college, which is the main goal. Time will tell what I'll be able to do for the university," Warp said. "I'm just gonna continue to work on my weaknesses and my strengths and be ready to make an impact when my opportunity comes about."
