The Hill County Commission during its business meeting Thursday approved a contract between the Hill County Council on Aging and Rocky Boy’s Indian Reservation’s Tribal Council to help fund a Meals on Wheels program that has been in increasing demand amid the pandemic.
Council on Aging Director Don Kenny said the contract is virtually identical to the one approved for fiscal year 2020-21 and helps provide meals to the elderly on the reservation.
He said the county, for the last few years, has sent $3,036 a month to the reservation to pay food expenses and that would be the same for this contract for now.
The commission approved the contract 2-0.
Hill County Commissioner Mark Peterson was absent at the meeting.
Hill County Commissioner Diane McLean proposed that a request be made in a subsequent meeting to increase the funding in the contract as demand for the service increases.
Kenny agreed, and said he would look into requesting more funding via an addendum to the current contract.
He said demand for the service has nearly doubled amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the disease being particularly dangerous to the elderly and those living in reservations in general.
“They’ve gone from about a 100 to 200 home-delivered meals per day,” he said.
At the meeting the commission also renewed a snow removal contract with C/T Smith Enterprises for snow removal from the North-Central Senior Center in a 2-0 vote.
The commissioners tabled discussion of a bid package for the Hill County Detention Center’s control panel.
McLean said the commission still needs time to look at the language being crafted for the package.
Wendland said the package is being updated to be less restrictive and possibly more attractive to those looking to pick the bid package up.
Wendland said no note-worthy progress has been made on the Hill County Courthouse’s elevator repairs.
McLean said Hill County Building Manager Daryl Anez said it looks like it should be fixed by the end of the month.
