Fort Benton is on a roll - to say the least. The Longhorns reached the Class C state volleyball tournament a year ago, and now, in their first year in the newly formed 7C, which consists of all the teams from the old District 6C East, the Longhorns cruised to a district championship.
In fact, last week in both Big Sandy and Fort Benton, the Longhorns swept their way to the title.
Fort Benton beat Chinook by scores of 25-22, 25-21 and 25-12 in the 7C championship match Saturday night in Fort Benton. The 7C tournament sent the top four teams to this week's Northern C, with Chinook finishing second, Geraldine-Highwood taking third and Chester-Joplin-Inverness coming in fourth.
Fort Benton, which will also host the Northern C, was simply dominant in its two tournament matches. In the chipper, the Longhorns got 12 kills and four blocks from Abby Clark, while Aspen Giese had five kills and two aces.
The Longhorns reached the championship match with a bye in the first round, and a sweep of CJI in the semifinals Friday night. Fort Benton beat the Hawks 3-0 and got a combined 14 kills from Abby Clark and Aspen Giese, while Maci Molinario had 18 assists and two digs.
CJI was the surprise team of the tournament. The Hawks won just three 7C regular season matches, but after stunning the Rivals by scores of 25-17, 25-23, 15-25 and 25-19 in Thursday's opening round, the Hawks put themselves in a great position. After falling to the Longhorns in the semifinals, CJI faced Centerville for a spot in the divisional tourney, and in a dominant display, the Hawks beat the Miners by scores of 25-14, 25-17 and 25-22. CJI would fall in a rematch with Geraldine-Highwood in the consolation match Saturday, but it was still a great run for the Hawks, who were once again led by star hitter/middle Tatum Hull.
Chinook also had a good run over the weekend. The Sugarbeeters swept Centerville by scores of 25-8, 25-8 and 25-20 in the opener Thursday. Delaney Kellam had six digs and four blocks, while Jayden Miller had eight kills. The win pushed the Beeters into the semifinals where they took down rival North Star in a sweep, by scores of 25-17, 25-22 and 25-19. Kellam again paced the Beeters, while Jade Wendland had eight kills and four blocks for the Knights, who would fall to the Rivals in a loser-out match Saturday morning, seeing their season come to an end.
Now, the top four teams from 7C and the top four teams from the 6C will meet in Fort Benton with two berths at state on the line. The Northern C runs Wednesday through Saturday.
