It's time for the Havre High cross country teams to hit the final stretch of the big race.
Yes, the season is wind9ing down for the Blue Ponies, who travel to Lewistown for the Eastern A Fall Classic Thursday. The meet, started several years ago, rotates around the conference, and replaces a divisional meet. Cross country doesn't require divisional or detract races because all teams qualify for the state meets.
And speaking of the state meets, the Montana High School Association announced approved changes to the 2020 All-Class State Meet, which will take place Oct. 23-24 in Kalispell. Normally, the meets are run with eight races, a boys and girls race for each classification. However, due to COVID-19, the meet has been altered. The MHSA announced Tuesday that the meet will now be a two-day event with Classes A and B running on Oct. 23 and Class AA and Class C competing the following day.
That is the main change for the state meet, which Havre, and head coach Kari Filius will be gearing up for this week in Lewistown. The Eastern A Fall Classic is the final regular season race for the Ponies, before they get ready to head to Kalispell for state.
In other MHSA news, the board also announced district and divisional volleyball tournament sites are required to have local county health department approval to host and they must send that approval to the MHSA office. The tournaments must follow all the requirements and considerations previously approved by the Executive Board.
For state volleyball, Class AA has moved to a playoff system for this season, while the other three classifications will hold state tournaments at separate sites. The All-Class State Tournament is normally held in Bozeman every year, but it will not be played this fall due to the ongoing COVID-19 crisis.
As for winter sports, the major announcement came Tuesday. As expected the board approved delaying the start of the winter sports season to Dec. 7. The original practice start date was Nov. 19.
The first contests can be held Jan. 4. The delay will allow time for schools and communities to assist in flattening the curve and to get through two holiday seasons within their own teams and within their own communities before contests begin.
