Cowboys tame the Ponies in the Corral

It has been a tough 2020 for the Havre High football team, especially when it comes to the Eastern A conference.

It has been a season of searching and consistent improvement for the Blue Ponies, who are still looking for their first win of the year. Unfortunatley, the Ponies didn't find that elusive win last Friday night.

The defending Class A state champions, the Miles City Cowboys, came up to Blue Pony Stadium for a showdown with Havre on the Ponies' homecoming game, but at the end of the night, the Cowboys throttled the Ponies 55-12 to continue their perfect season and to hand the Ponies another tough loss on the already rough year.

Havre head coach Ryan Gatch knew that Miles City would be tough from the start.

"Anytime you play a top team in the state, you got to have a good performance," Gatch said. "I thought the guys came out and played real hard. It's fun to see us improving and getting better. We still got a lot of work to do because football is a never-ending process. I thought we brought a good game against a Miles City team that's strong, physical and fast."

The game started off a bit slow offensively, but the Cowboys would find the endzone first, pulling ahead with a 7-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. The second quarter would see Miles City explode, with three touchdowns, including one right before halftime, to take a huge lead over the Blue Ponies 28-0, keeping Havre out of the endzone all the while.

Back from the break, the Cowboys continued to score, putting up two more touchdowns in the third quarter, while the Ponies pushed down the field to the endzone for their first touchdown of the game, but failing on the point-after attempt. Miles City added two more touchdowns to the night in the fourth, all the while sealing the game, while HHS scored as the clock ran out in the fourth quarter to avoid a shutout.

Both of Havre's second-half TDs came by way of senior running back Kellen Detrick.

Despite the loss, Gatch saw plenty of players stand out, including a strong junior veteran of the squad.

"Orion Thivierge had a really nice game at the wide receiver position," Gatch said. "He had a lot of great catches and plays for some good yards. He did a good job and you love to see that. We started him off at the tailback position early in the season and then we moved him around a little bit. We thought that was a good move."

The Blue Ponies (0-5) will await the next challenger in the winless Hardin Bulldogs, who come up to play Friday at 7 p.m. in Blue Pony Stadium.
