Fire on Baldy Mountain

A fire started on Rocky Boy's Indian Reservation near the top of Baldy Mountain, apparently Saturday afternoon, a Bear Paw Mountains resident and the Big Sandy Volunteer Fire Department confirmed.

Renee Brown, who lives on a ranch just south of the reservation near Warrick, said she noticed the fire around 3:30 to 4: p.m. Saturday and she's heard that fire crews from the Rocky Boy Volunteer Fire Department are having trouble accessing the fire due to the terrain.

"It's almost impossible to get to, so their having to hike into it," she said.

Big Sandy Volunteer Fire Department reported it was put on standby for the fire but has since been released.

Brown said that, while the fire seems difficult to get to, she hasn't seen much activity from it yet this morning.

"It's not doing a whole lot at the moment, just a little smoke now and then," she said, "It's staying put for the most part. We don't have a whole lot of wind, so that helps."

She said she saw a spotter plane yesterday, but hasn't seen any water drops on the fire.

The Havre Daily News had not heard back from the Rocky Boy Volunteer Fire Department or Box Elder Volunteer Fire Department by the time this was filed.
