A group of off-road driving enthusiasts is planning a get-together for Saturday in the badlands 20 miles northwest of Havre, not far from Fresno Reservoir, and anyone interested in going, including anyone who has never tried off-road recreation, is welcome to join the group.
Nate Ramsey, one of the organizers, said the plan is for everyone to meet at Town Pump on First Street at 11 a.m. and drive together to Fresno OHV Area.
Access to the off-highway vehicle area is from Wildhorse Road north of town, and the roads eventually dwindle to an unimproved dirt road across state and private land. Once on the off-road site people will be on approximately 82 acres of badlands with some developed tracks and paths and wild areas, open to four-wheel drive vehicles, all-terrain vehicles, side-by-sides and motorcycles.
Ramsey recommended that four-wheel-drive vehicles have at least 33-inch tires.
He said they will be exploring different tracks through the OHV area and possibly developing new ones, in this tract of land which the Bureau of Land Management specifically set aside for off-road recreation.
If the weather allows, Ramsey said, they are also planning to camp overnight just off the OHV area, which is free to use but does not allow overnight camping. He added that the camping conditions will be primitive, and the group will be following COVID-19 safety practices, so everyone should bring their own food and drinks and be prepared for the lack of amenities.
