Local Golf Report: Kyle had one of those special days

From Tee to Green

A heat wave is coming this week, and, local golf leagues are heating up with it, as the race for the playoffs is well underway.

At Prairie Farms Golf Course last week, low scores were the order of the day.

Last Tuesday night in men’s league, Kyle Sheppard fired a 37 for low gross, while Jake Myers, Chad Edgar, Dan Kiederowski and Christian Oberquell tied for low net with 34. Myers Ranch was high team with 24.5 points. Mason Sheppard, Jake and Rob Myers and Greg Mosness made up the winning team.

Last Wednesday night saw Jeremy Jensen shoot a sizzling 35 for low-gross honors, while Mike Evans was low net at 30.5. Valley Furniture was high team with 25 points. The team consisted of Evans, Dave Peterson, Patch Wirtzberger and Kerry Ward.

In ladies league last Thursday night, Sarah Spangler continued her run of excellent play, as she earned low gross with a 2-over par 38. Lorrie Keller was low net with a 31.5 and DA Davidson was high team with 23.5 points. The top team was made up of Patsy Divish, Paula Sheppard, Karla Bolken and Shari Baltrusch.

At BCGC in men's league last Thursday night, Jackson Boos fired a stellar even-par 36, while Rich MacDonald and Pete Stiffarm were low gross at 30.5. High team went to Plain Green with 24.5 points. The squad is made up of Tony Lawson, MacDonald. Isiah Murie and James Seymore.

And since we’re talking about really good golf, I’d be remiss if I didn’t give a shoutout to my friend, cousin, and golf teammate Kyle Miller for shooting a round of 65 Saturday. Yes, I said that right, Kyle went really low, 7-under par low, and he did it in breezy, hot conditions, with fast greens.

Congrats, Kyle, that’s one hell of a round, and since he was there to witness it, MSU-Northern golf coach, professor and world-renowned fisherman Jim Kirk patrick asked me if he could write a little something to commemorate Kyle's round. The following is Jim's account of an incredible Saturday:

Most of the time special days are in the eye of the person saying it was a “special day.” Saturday was one of those so-called special days that come very rarely in a person's life. It wasn’t me or anything I did to make it so special, it was everyone that was involved in just another Saturday golf game. Same group of guys, same golf course, same 12-15 Whiteclaws with a few Kokanee mixed in. Wind blowing steady at 15 and from the northwest it was just another Saturday. Just another Saturday until about the fifth hole. I was a smooth 5-over after 5 with a snowman on the par-5 fifth.

But it wasn’t about me.

My playing partner that day was Kyle Miller a great golfer by every standard especially here in Havre. While I was going north like the wind that day, he was going south. Birdie on one, birdie on two, par on three, birdie on four, par on five. Three-under after five, par on six and the story goes on, birdie on seven, par on eight, birdie on 9. What just happened? Kyle shot a 31 front nine and it seemed effortless. We all knew it was a crazy good front nine, as we turned he said “I've never broke 70.” Well neither has 98 percent of every amateur golfer out there.

But, quick restock of the cooler and back 9 here we go. Par on 10, par on 11, par on 12, you get the idea. He had a par on 13 a birdie on 14, 15 a par, 16 birdie, 17 par. One hole to play and 7 under don’t take a 10 on 18 and you break 70. Perfect drive, perfect wedge to 10 feet and an easy two-putt for 65! Thanks, Miller, for one of those really special days and letting me be a part of it. Special thanks to C.J. Evans, Lunar Evans and Buzz Pizzini to adding to that once in a lifetime Saturday. Finding something good in the year of 2020 might be hard for everyone, maybe I'll forget about Corona someday. But for sure I won’t forget Kyle’s 65! Cheers.
