Havre High School graduate Kylynn Jarman received a $500 scholarship from Havre P.E.O Chapter AZ.
"It feels really great, actually," she said. "My mom was very proud."
She said that she will be attending the University of Montana in Missoula to study physical therapy.
Havre P.E.O Chapter AZ member Paulette Cronk presented the scholarship to Jarman.
Cronk said Jarman was one of 28 Havre High School girls who applied for the scholarship.
"Kylynn was just our favorite," she said.
She said every year P.E.O. members choose one or two girls for a scholarship.
The mission of P.E.O. - Philanthropic Educational Organization - is to have all women be the best that they can be in this life and go to college, Cronk said.
"I have been on this mission for about 10 years now, and I've met some interesting young ladies," Cronk said. They're just so precious and I've been following them."
P.E.O is a wonderful organization, she said.
"We just try to think of good deeds we can do for people," she added. "We have fundraisers so we can make this money and the goal was to give it away."
P.E.O. was founded Jan. 21, 1869, by seven students at Iowa Wesleyan College in Mount Pleasant, Iowa. Their desire to start their own sisterhood was a result of the exclusion of some of the friends by a local sorority at their college. This circle of kindred spirits - bonded by their enthusiasm for women's opportunities - eventually expanded to include women off campus as well.
Today, P.E.O. has grown from that tiny membership of seven to nearly a quarter of a million members in chapters throughout the U.S. and Canada.
