OUTDOORS: Fresno Challenge canceled due to COVID-19

FWP reminds everyone to have their watercraft inspected for invasive species

The coronavirus has gotten in the way of a lot over the last few months. And even though the event is held in the great outdoors, the same was true for the area's biggest fishing tournament.

The Fresno Walleye Challenge, part of the Walleyes Unlimited Series, was scheduled for this weekend at Fresno Resevoir. However, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the tournament, and the junior day, were canceled.

"The Fresno Chapter has made the difficult decision to cancel its upcoming tournament scheduled for June 13th and 14th. We feel this is in the best interest of the members of our community and the volunteers that make the event possible. Tammy P. will be contacting you in regards to a refund if you have already paid your entry. We hope you and your families are safe and healthy and we look forward to putting this event on in 2021," the chapter announced on its Facebook page last month.

The Fresno Chapter also had to cancel its annual banquet earlier this spring due to the pandemic.

Of course, boating and fishing is in still in full swing at Fresno, and all other bodies of water around the Hi-Line. And with that, Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks is making sure everybody stops at FWP Watercraft Inspection Sites this summer.

Watercraft inspection stations are Montana's first line of defense to prevent the movement of aquatic invasive species. Boat owners should ensure their watercraft and trailers are clean, drained and dry before transporting and need to be aware of Montana's inspection rules.

The nearest sites for this area are, a Class II inspection station just west of Havre, as well as a pair of Decomtaniation Stations at Tiber Reservoir's VFW Campground.
