HELENA — Campaign season is a busy time for candidates and their staff. Political signs are a traditional method of advertising, but proper placement of these signs goes beyond campaigning.
The Montana Department of Transportation is reminding candidates of the laws regarding placement of political campaign signs along state highways. Signs on highway fences, utility poles, and otherwise on state right of way are not permitted and will be removed by MDT Maintenance crews. Every year, unlawful placement of signs in ditches, or on the highway side of fences, is a recurring problem that results in signs being removed.
Acceptable locations for signs include privately owned land along the state highways, either outside towns or in town. Cities and towns may have their own sign placement requirements for all highways, streets and alleys within the town. Political campaign committees and candidates must have permission from the property owner before any signs are placed on private property. When placing them on private property along the highway, it is unsafe and illegal to drive or park in the right of way during the installation of signs. Following the election all signs must be removed within 14 days.
Beyond these Montana rules for political signs, federal laws and local sign ordinances must also be followed at all times.
