From Tee to Green
Normally, league golf starts in April, but the COVID-19 pandemic has had plenty to say about a lot of things starting late, or not starting at all, including the sport of golf.
But as Montana continues to carefully re-open under Phase I of Gov. Steve Bullock's plan, the sport of golf has been a very safe outlet, and now, our two local courses are moving forward with their annual golf leagues.
Both Prairie Farms and Beaver Creek Golf Course will begin golf leagues next week. Prairie Farms men's league will begin next Tuesday and Wednesday, and spots are still available on both nights if anyone would like to form a team. Ladies League at Prairie Farms will begin next Thursday night.
BCGC's men's league, which is holding a meeting tonight at 6, will also begin next Thursday night. For more information about leagues at BCGC or Prairie Farms, contact the Pro Shop at either course.
And while leagues are starting back up soon, I need to take a moment to talk about golf that never got going.
As with all springs sports, the Montana High School Association canceled the Class B and C spring golf season, and that meant no season for all area golfers, including in Chinook, Harlem, Rocky Boy and Fort Benton. High school golf in the spring is for Class B and C only, and it's, of course, a very popular sport, even at the smaller schools. In fact, Box Elder and Rocky Boy are, like many Class B and C schools, fielding golf teams without actually having a course in either town. That's one of the unique things about high school golf in Montana, and what makes it special.
So, as a high school golf coach, I'd like to take this opportunity to tell all of our area high school golfers that I'm very sorry you didn't get a season. It sucks, it's not fair, and it is really sad. To the senior golfers, we are all very sorry you didn't get the opportunity to finish what you started but, remember, golf is a sport that you can play and enjoy for the rest of your life, so don't give up on it.
And to those golfers who will be coming back next spring, get out there and practice because better days are ahead. So practice and play this summer, so you can come back with a vengeance next spring.
