The Hill County Sheriff’s Office has warned people that they need to beware of a scammer looking to get information or money by pretending to be from the sheriff’s office.
A release from the sheriff’s office said area residents have reported receiving calls from a scammer spoofing the Hill County Sheriff’s Office phone number in Havre.
The release said the scammer identifies themself as a member of law enforcement and tells the victim they have warrants out for their arrest.
The scammer then tries to get the victim’s credit card information or tells the victim to wire money through electronic transfer, such as money gram or green dot cards, or they will be arrested, the release said.
The scammer is very specific in telling the victim they are to keep the information confidential and are not to tell anyone about the phone call, the release added.
The release said representatives of the Hill County Sheriff’s Office will never ask people for their credit card information and will never ask people to send money by electronic transfer.
People who receive an apparent call from the Hill County Sheriff’s Office and question its validity should always get the caller’s name and call the dispatch center at 265-2512 ext 0 to verify the call, the release said.
“Thank you and be safe,” the release said.
