News you can use
Year-in-year-out, the talent in boys basketball on the Hi-Line is palpable. And it's always reflected in the Havre Daily News All Hi-Line Team.
And 2020 is no different, but, what it different is, this year's All Hi-Line Boys Team represents a changing of the guard, so to speak. There are just four players on this year's list who have made the team before, meaning there are 10 newcomers. And yet upperclassmen still dominate the list with eight seniors and four juniors earning All Hi-Line honors.;
The schools in our area are well-represented too. Four players from Havre High, as well as players from both Harlem and Rocky Boy, and five schools from the District 9C make up the 2020 All Hi-Line Boys Team.
Garrett Diekhans, Fort Benton
A three-time All Hi-Line selection, Diekhans averaged close to a double-double in his senior year for the Longhorns. He was Class C All-State for the third time as well, and, he helped lead the Longhorns to District 9C and Northern C championships, as well as their first trip to the state tournament since 1992. Despite getting plenty of attention from college basketball coaches, Diekhans signed to play football for Montana Tech.
Kellen Detrick, Havre
Detrick makes the All Hi-Line Team for the second year in a row. He led the Blue Ponies in scoring, 16 ppg, and rebounding, 7 rpg, on his way to Class A All-State honors as a junior. He's also an All-State football player for HHS, and is garnering offers from Division I football programs as we speak. Still, Detrick will also be considered one of the top basketball players returning in Montana next winter.
Ethan Bell, Chinook
A junior, Bell makes the All Hi-Line list for the first time and follows in the footsteps of his older brother, who was a three-time selection. Bell was a dynamic point guard for Chinook this past season, which made its fourth-straight trip to the Northern C. Bell also garnered Northern C honors for the second year in a row.
Brad Cichosz, Harlem
Cichosz had a monster senior season, which got him back on the All Hi-Line Team after missing out last year because of injuries. Cichosz averaged over 20 points per game for the Wildcats, and also broke the MHSA single-game scoring record back in February when he scored 68 points against Harlem. Cichosz is also a two-time Class B All-State selection, and, he won the Class B state cross country championship back in the fall.
Hayden Diekhans, Fort Benton
Diekhans, a junior, is a repeat performer on the list. He also exploded onto the scene this season with his 16 points per game, in helping Fort Benton to 9C and Northern C crowns. Diekhans was also a star on the football field, where he helped the Longhorns reach the Class C 8-man semifinals in the fall.
Ryan Roth, Big Sandy
Roth is a senior making his first trip to the All Hi-Line Team. And it's well-deserved. He averaged nearly 20 points per night, and he went on a tear in a postseason in which the Pioneers reached the Northern C for the first time in nine years. Like many on the list, Roth was also a standout football player, and is All-State in both sports.
Reese Elliot, Chinook
Elliot really broke out this season, averaging a double-double, as well as becoming the premier center on the Hi-Line. A standout in football as well, Elliot will return next season and will be considered one of the top college basketball prospects in Montana.
Mason Rismon, Havre
Rismon makes the All Hi-Line Team as a senior, and he becomes the third Rismon brother to do so. Averaging close to 12 points per game, Rismon really came on strong in the second half of the season, and, he earned Northeast A First-Team honors as a result.
Blake Cantrell, Rocky Boy
Cantrell keeps the tradition alive of a Rocky Boy player making the list every single year since its inception. He had a strong season for the Stars, averaging 18 points per outing. Cantrell also helped send Rocky Boy back to the Class B state tournament, yet again.
Caden Rettig, North Star
A strong senior season by Rettig was expected. A four-year starter for the Knights, Rettig earned all Northern C honors yet again, while averaging 13 points and five assists per outing. Rettig is also a Six-Man All-State selection in football, and has always been a standout in track and field as well.
Josh Warp, Havre
Like his teammate Rismon, Warp is the third player in his family to make the All Hi-Line Team. In his first year as the Ponies' starting point guard, Warp averaged nearly 10 points, while making a team-high 27 3-pointers. For his efforts, Warp earned Northeast A All-Conference honors, and, he's also an All-Conference performer in tennis and golf at HHS.
Clint Darlington, Big Sandy
Darlington had a monster senior season for the resurgent Pioneers. He averaged 15 points and nine rebounds for the season, but, in the 9C and Northern C tournaments combined, he got on a roll, where he averaged 20 points and 12 rebounds. Darlington was also a standout two-way football player for the Pioneers, who reached the Six-Man playoffs once again.
R.J. Ramone, Harlem
Ramone, in just his second year of starting for the Wildcats, pumped in almost 20 points per game this past season, helping the Wildcats to the 2B regular season title. Ramone also earned All 2B First-Team honors, and will be back next year as part of another talented Harlem squad.
Jake Huston, Havre
The fourth Havre Blue Pony to be voted to the team, Huston was steady as a rock for the Ponies in his second year as a starter. He averaged 12 ppg and shot 55 percent from the floor on his way to Northeast A All-Conference accolades. Huston too is an All-Conference standout in tennis at HHS.
Editor's Note: The All Hi-Line Boys Team is voted on by available area coaches and does not reflect the opinion of any single individual including members of the Havre Daily News sports staff.
