Harlem's L'Tia Lawrence has committed to play basketball for the University of Montana Lady Griz, and will sign with them later this month.
She was all set to be a Skylight. Now however, L'Tia Lawrence will be a Grizzly.
On Tuesday afternoon, Lawrence announced she has decided to commit to the University of Montana Lady Griz basketball program. She had signed with Montana State University-Northern last fall, but now she will receive a scholarship from Montana, and will sign with the Griz, of head coach Shannon Schweyen in April.
"I am very excited and proud of her and thankful for her opportunity," Martin Lawrence, L'Tia's dad and Harlem's head coach said. "She had planned on playing for Coach Mouat and the MSU-Northern Skylights when she signed last season, but a lot has happened and changed since then. Me and my family are very thankful for coach Mouat and the opportunity he gave her, but it has always been her dream to play at the D1 level and for her to work so hard and be given that opportunity is just an amazing thing."
Lawrence will not get that chance. A four-year starter, and three-time Class B All-State selection, Lawrence is the Harlem girls all-time leading scorer, while averaging 18 points, six rebounds and nearly four assists per game over just the last two seasons.
She also helped the Wildcats achieve never-before-seen heights, as they went to back-to-back Class B state tournaments.
"She is a very hard working kid with a high basketball IQ," Martin Lawrence said. "She has great handles, can create for herself off the dribble and create for her teammates. She can also hit the open three."
Lawrence becomes the thrid local product to join the Lady Griz from the Class of 2020.
Havre star Kyndall Keller and former Box Elder great Joelnell Momberg both signed with Schweyen and the Lady Griz last fall, and now, Lawrence will be a part of that recruiting class, too.
"Many thanks to coach Schweyen for giving her this opportunity," Martin Lawrence said. "As a coach, I am excited to see one of our own hometown athletes work hard and be given this opportunity to strive to be their best."
