Four HHS cagers earn Class A All-State accolades for 2019-2020 hoops season
After the abrupt end to the basketball season, many teams across Montana were crowned co-champions, while some were left wondering what would happen next. Regardless, the Havre High basketball teams made some strides this season and now, some of those players have been recognized in the Northeast A All-Conference/Class A All-State selections.
Blue Pony boys head coach Walynn Burgess was glad to see such a great list of athletes across the conference and from his team be recognized for their hard work.
"Overall, I thought the list was well-represented not just by Havre High players but the Northeast A as a whole," Burgess said. "It was a tough conference night in and night out and it shows on this list."
For the Havre boys, who finished the year with a 12-9 overall and 5-3 conference record, junior Kellen Detrick was selected for the All-State team and the All-Conference first team, while senior Mason Rismon joined Detrick as a first-team all-conference selection. On the second team, senior Jake Huston and junior Josh Warp were recognized.
As Rismon and Huston graduate in the future, with stellar careers at Havre on their list of achievements, the two standouts for the Ponies will be remembered for their dedication and leadership on the hardwood this year.
Detrick and Warp will be returning to the court for their last season next year, where they aim to make some noise one last time. Detrick has been a force on both sides of the ball this season, while Warp has been lethal when it comes to sinking field goals, especially 3-pointers.
At the end of the day, all four young men have done something great this year and Burgess was thankful for the selections that the other coaches made regarding his team and proud of what work they did to get there.
"Getting two first teamers in Mason and Kellen and two second teamers is pretty special." Burgess said. "It just goes to show what the other conference coaches thought of our team this year."
Meanwhile, the Blue Pony girls, who ended the year with a 22-3 overall, and 8-0 conference record, had a lot of players on the list.
Senior Kyndall Keller, senior Kadia Miller and sophomore Sadie Filius were recognized on both the All-State and First Team all-conference lists this season. Junior Loy Waid, senior Jessa Chvilicek, senior Katie Wirtzberger and junior Kylie Walker were all selected for the Second Team. Senior Sam Oliver was recognized as an Honorable Mention.
Keller was named All-State for the fourth straight year, while Miller got her third All-State nod and Filius her second in a row.
Under head coach Dustin Kraske, who was selected as the Northeast A Coach of the Year, these Blue Pony girls have done amazing things on the court. On top of that, all Havre seniors were placed across the list, further cementing the prowess that the five girls put forward in their last season as Ponies.
Stay tuned to the Havre Daily News for more postseason basketball honors in the coming days.
