Consumers warned not to eat a roast beef product from Bear Paw Meats

Company removed all of the product; people who bought prior to removal urged not to eat it

HELENA - The Montana Department of Livestock is issuing a public health alert because Bear Paw Meats, 760 Ninth St. East, Chinook, a state inspected establishment, produced and distributed an unknown quantity of roast beef that was not fully cooked but sold as a ready-to-eat product without further cooking instructions on the package.

The problem was discovered by a routine food safety assessment conducted by the Meat and Poultry Inspection Bureau of the Montana Department of Livestock.

A recall was not recommended by the Montana Meat and Poultry Inspection Bureau Recall Committee because the establishment voluntarily removed all affected products from commerce, but any product sold prior to the removal may still be in the hands of consumers and the possibility of adverse health outcomes exists if this product is consumed.

The affected meat products were produced and packaged on various dates from approximately Sept. 9 through Dec. 16.

The following product is subject to the public health alert:

• Roast Beef – Product was marketed as a ready-to-eat product but was not fully cooked.

This product bears the state mark of inspection and establishment number 021. Affected products are no longer available for sale, but individual consumers may still have these products in their possession.

There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products. Anyone concerned about an illness should contact a health care provider. Consumers and businesses who have purchased this product are urged not to consume it. This product should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.
