After a bit of a break, it was back on the ice for the Havre Ice Hawks high school hockey team, and the Ice Hawks headed on the road to face off against the Glasgow Ice Dawgs in Glasgow last Saturday and Sunday.
And the Ice Hawks got the wins they needed, sweeping the Ice Dawgs in all three games, the first score being 4-3, the second 5-4 and the third 3-2 in overtime. Each game was down to the wire, especially the third matchup. In the end, the three wins will be a nice boost of confidence for the Ice Hawks, too. Havre head coach Barry Brownlee was pleased with the results that came from the three games in Glasgow.
“Every game was a good hard fought game, with both teams giving everything they had to pull off a win,” Brownlee said. “The team finally came together and can now see what playing together really means. They worked hard to put into play things we have been working on and worked together to have an amazing weekend.”
The first game saw the first of the three close bouts, with senior Bridger Staples racking up three goals for the Ice Hawks, while Theron Peterson added one more to help Havre grab the first win of the series.
The second game of the series saw four different Ice Hawks score goals. Tavish McLean put up two, while Staples, Donovan McLain and Stephen Preputin all added one goal each to rack up the second win of the series for Havre.
In the third and final game of the series, Glasgow and the Ice Hawks battled furiously, with the Ice Dawgs trying to avoid being swept and Havre looking to stay consistent in the series. With the game tied at 2-2 at the end of regulation, after McLain and Staples put up a goal each, senior Dexter Beck scored the game-winning goal in overtime to help the Ice Hawks sweep Glasgow.
“The things that stood out was the team play, and from the fellow coaches Shawn Preputin and Nick Woods, who have been working hard with the kids to bring out their full potential,” Brownlee said. “It was a weekend where all we could say was good job to the kids. They excelled in every aspect I could ask for.”
The Ice Hawks close out the regular season Feb. 29 and March 1 in Kalispell.
