Hi-Line Girls Basketball Roundup
It was an interesting first weekend in February, and it's actually not over yet. Big 9C games, and cancellations due to wind were the stories this past weekend in girls basketball on the Hi-Line, but moving forward, the story is, the district tournaments are less than three weeks away.
Last week started on Thursday with a big rematch between Rocky Boy and Harlem. The Wildcats beat the Morning Stars to start the new year, and, in Rocky Boy Thursday night, they did it again, as Harlem crushed the rival Morning Stars 87-52. Rocky Boy did rebound on Friday night, with a big win over Cut Bank. The Morning Stars beat the Wolves 51-46 to stay in third place in the 1B standings.
On Friday night, the surging Hays-Lodge Pole Thunderbirds tried to upset Fort Benton, but it wasn't to be as the Longhorns pulled away for a 56-42 win. HLP trailed just 18-16 after the first quarter, but a 20-9 run by Fort Benton in the third was enough to finish HLP off. Aspen Giese scored 16 points and Megan Clark chipped in with 10 for the Longhorns, while Ella Messerly paced HLP with 15 points.
In another big 9C game Friday night, Box Elder knocked off second-place North Star 60-46 in Box Elder. The Bears outscored the Knights 46-22 in the second half for their third straight win. Sarah Parisian poured in 22 points for the Bears, while Shayla Borlaug had 13 points for North Star.
In a non-conference action Friday night, Big Sandy was thumped by DGS, 52-12 on the road. Also, Turner was upset by Dodson Friday night on the road, 42-37. The Tornadoes got 19 points from Shyan Krass in the stunning loss.
However, in a critical 9C showdown Saturday night, the Tornadoes bounced back, At home, Turner edged Box Elder 49-42. The Bears led 11-8 early on, but Turner overtook Box Elder in the second quarter, and held on down the stretch. Krass scored a game-high 23 points for Turner, while Emma Billmayer added 13. Sarah Parisian again led Box Elder, with 17 points.
HLP also rebounded from Friday's loss at Fort Benton with a 48-20 home win over Chinook. The T-Birds started the game on an 18-5 run and never looked back.
Harlem also won a non-conference affair Saturday night, blowing out Cut Bank 61-34.
Meanwhile, due to record-setting winds, and poor travel conditions, non-conference games between North Star and Conrad, and CJI and Valier were cancelled Saturday.
Last Saturday's game between Fort Benton and Big Sandy was also postponed until Monday night, where the Longhorns took care of the Pioneers 52-12.
