Pony swim teams tested in Bozeman

Times will always get tough in a season and there will ultimately be a low-point. A lot of the time that tough point comes when a team is up against really tough competition. For the Havre High swim teams, the Bozeman Invitational Saturday did not go as well as it had hoped, but there were still some good moments.

The Blue Ponies went up against a lot of the Class AA and Class A elite last Saturday in the Bozeman Swim Center. The meet was intense and both the girls and boys felt a fair share of heated competition. At the end of the day, the girls team finished in 10th place, while the boys team placed eighth in the meet.

The results may not be very high, but HHS head coach Bill Kilgore is still glad his team put a great effort into the meet despite the tough conditions.

“The late night overnight trips are always a struggle for us,” Kilgore said. “Hotel rooms full of friends and teammates are not the most conducive places for sleep and rest, but the kids did have a great time and enjoyed bonding as a team. As far as the actual meet goes, those that swam actually swam really well, but we did have several kids not swimming due to illness and injury. Overall, I am very happy where the team is right now.”

Even with the low finishes team-wise, there were still some notable swims and swimmers that stood out in the water. Kobi Burchard took fifth place in the girls 50-yard freestyle with a time of 27.75, while Megan Miller took 10th with a 28.56 in the same event. Senior standout Jacob Miller finished in fourth place in the boys 100-yard breaststroke with a 1:10.59 and placed eighth in the boys 100-yard freestyle with a time of 55.68.

Kilgore brought forward some other swims that caught his attention at the meet, as well, including Hannah Pratt’s 500 free, Carson Sandstrom’s 100 free, Willie LaSmith’s 50 free, Joey Byrd’s 100 free, Troy Powell’s 100 free, Hiram Cammon’s breaststroke, Aliviah Pratt’s 200 IM and the boys 200 medley and free relay.

When it comes to the relays, Kilgore said that there has been a good improvement as the season has progressed, as well.

“Our relays are really starting to take shape as we dial in what swimmer should swim what stroke in the Medley Relay and how to divide up the 200 and 400 Freestyle relays to generate the most points possible for the team,” Kilgore said. “Those points are essential in a swim meet as they count for double the points of individual events.”

In the end, Havre may have hit a speedbump down in Bozeman, but Kilgore and his team know that the only way to go is up. On top of that, Kilgore knows just how important the meet is in the season.

“The kids are really starting to trust in their training, and in some cases, newfound experience, to have the faith to really push themselves in their events without fear of getting exhausted,” Kilgore said. “This is an important part of the season because it allows the swimmers to grow the confidence they need to have in themselves to be successful.”

Next up, the Ponies head back to a familiar pool. The Havre swim teams will be back in Great Falls for the next two weeks.
