A hobby gaming store has opened in the Holiday Village Mall called Sugar & Dice.
"Sugar & Dice is a hobby gaming store where we are going to be carrying collectible card games like Magic: The Gathering, we are going to be carrying hobby board games," store owner Kevin Zoren said. "We also carry role-playing games like Dungeons and Dragons, Pathfinder and Call of Cthulhu."
He said hobby board games are something that have really taken off in Europe, especially over the last 20 years, and it has just started to catch on here in America in the last 10 years
He added that what separates them from classic games that people might have played when they were kids like Risk is that hobby games have large less luck-related, more decision-based components to them and that the games try a lot of creative mechanics and such.
Sugar & Dice will be open only on Fridays and Saturdays from 5 to 8 p.m. for now, more days and times will be determined later.
"We are only opened at limited times because we want our time to be event-based, and so every night as we get going we'll have events where people can come in and try out different games, play different games," Zoren said. "The goal is to eventually have a games library as well where there will be games that you can just take off the shelf, play it and in order to get the games library going we need a little time for the distributors to realize we are going to stick around and supply us the demo games, so that we can start that."
People bringing in their own games to use the Sugar & Dice space and enjoy refreshments on sale is an option, he said.
He added that Sugar & Dice is a passion project of his and that any money people spend at the store will be reinvested into the store.
"That's basically what we are, board games, card games and hobby board games," he said. "For me, it's about the enjoyment we get (from) playing games together."
