Havre High girls ready to ground a pair of Eagles

The Havre High girls basketball team has played just two games in the Northeast A Conference. But, just like they were in the Central A, the Blue Ponies are looking like heavy favorites to win their new conference crown.

And the Ponies, of head coach Dustin Kraske will get a chance to do even more conference damage this weekend when they host Lewistown tonight and visit Sidney Saturday.

Havre comes into the weekend with a 5-1 overall record and a 2-0 mark in league play, which is tied with Sidney for first place. But, before the Ponies look to break that tie with the Eagles, they'll be focused on Lewistown tonight in Havre.

The Golden Eagles are 2-1 in conference play and boast a tough group overall. Senior Macy Mangold will aim to help Lewistown overcome the Ponies. Plus, Havre has had a good recent history against the Golden Eagles, beating them all four times in the regular season the past two years.

Following tonight's game, Havre will head to Sidney to face the up-start Eagles, who have gotten off to a stellar start this winter. Like Havre, the Eagles play stout defense, while on offense, Sidney is led by Maddie Peters, who scores 11 points per night, while Karissa Martinez chips in with seven.

And while Sidney has looked much improved this season, the Ponies will be tough to beat, even on the Eagles' home floor.

Havre is once again the best defensive team in Class A, while offensively, the Ponies are extremely balanced. Of course, they're led by senior Kyndall Keller, who averages 18 points per game, but Sadie Filius and Kadia Miller are each scoring nine per game, while Loy Waid, Jessa Chvilicek and Katie Wirtzberger are all averaging five points per night. Miller and Waid each chip in with five rebounds per contest.

And it's that kind of depth and talent that makes the Ponies so tough to beat especially in the new Northeast A. So in the end In the end, Havre will look to ground two birds in one weekend to both stay in the conference race and keep a good record on the season as a whole.

Tonight's game between the Pony girls and Lewistown starts at 5:30 in the HHS gymnasium. Havre's game at Sidney will tip at 5 p.m. Saturday.
