VFW Post 497 awards Voice of Democracy scholarship

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 497 in Havre has awarded a scholarship in the VFW Voice of Democracy contest.

Havre High School's Zephania Linton took first place in the contest and earned a $300 scholarship and the opportunity to move on to the district competition.

The winner of the district competition advances to the state contest, and the winner of that competes in the national competition for a $30,000 scholarship.

Haydon Massar of North Star High School in Rudyard was first runner up in the Post 497 contest, and Precious Reigne of Box Elder High School was second runner up.

Post 497 presented gift certificates to Massar and Reigne for their runner-up finishes.

Voice of Democracy is open to students grades nine through 12, giving students the opportunity to win multiple scholarships throughout high school to use when they enter college.

The contest, started by VFW in 1947, gives high school students the opportunity to present an oral essay on issues of a democratic and patriotic theme, selected by the VFW commander in chief each year.

The theme for this year's contest is "What Makes America Great?"

Students write an essay on the theme and record it, submitting the recording and typed version of the essay to be judged.

Contest entries for this year were due Oct. 31.

The theme for each year's contest, both for Voice of Democracy and its Patriot's Pen essay-writing contest for students grades six through eight, typically is announced a few weeks after the national VFW Legislative Conference where the winners of that year's competition are recognized.

This year's legislative conference, where the state winners qualifying for the national competition are recognized, is scheduled for March 1-5, the VFW website says.
