25 years of the MLK Day of Service

Press release

Corporation for National and Community Service said in a release that the number 25 has been big for the last year or so at CNCS. First, it celebrated the 25th birthday of the agency, then AmeriCorps’ 25th anniversary, and next year marks the 25th anniversary of the Martin Luther King Day of Service.

Jan. 20, millions of people across the nation will observe the MLK Day of Service, making the federal holiday “a day on, not a day off.” The Corporation for National and Community Service has led this effort since it was charged by Congress to do so in 1994.

During the last quarter-century, the MLK Day of Service has grown in size and impact as more Americans embraced the idea that citizenship involves taking an active role to make communities better. Serving on MLK Day can establish a habit of volunteering and build connections that can last a lifetime.

CNCS encourages everyone to join the national service family and get involved with a service project in their community. People can visit http://MLKDay.gov to register their project or discover events in their area to make the holiday a day on.
