Northern men bounce back with a win in Phoenix

The Montana State University-Northern Lights had a tough start to the 2019 Cactus Classic in Phoenix. But, Tuesday night, Northern finished strong.

After falling to nationally ranked Arizona Christian Saturday and Mount Vernon Nazarene Monday, the Lights bounced back to handle Embry-Riddle University Tuesday night in Phoenix.

It was a much-needed win for Northern, which led wire-to-wire. In the first half, MSU-N took the lead with under three minutes gone by, and the Lights would never trail again.

Leading 36-26 at the break, Northern wold go on to lead by as many as 28 points in the second half on its way to a 78-58 victory.

Adam Huse hit six 3-pointers for the Lights and scored 19 points, while Mascio McCadney added 16 on four triples and Kavon Bey scored 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds.

Before the Lights took care of Embry-Riddle, they hit a speed bump against Mount Vernon in a 68-63 setback. The Lights were locked in a high-scoring first half with Mount Vernon, trailing by just one, 35-34. The second half was nearly as close, and, overall, the two teams traded the lead 13 times in the game. But, in the end, Mount Vernon outscored Northern 33-29 in the final 20 minutes to win.

In the loss, David Harris scored a season-high 19 points for Northern, while Mascio McCadney chipped in with 11.

Going 1-2 in Phoenix, the Lights are now 8-3 on the season. MSU-N will be back at home next Friday and Saturday when the Lights host Alberta-Augustana in the Duck Inn Holiday Classic.
