Sunnyside students learn, sell at trade fair

Local elementary students received some hands-on economic experience when Sunnyside Intermediate School held its annual Trade Fair Thursday.

The Sunnyside Trade Fair was hosted by the fifth-grade class, which showcased a variety of crafts that were all made by class members who used household items for their work.

The event took place in the school gymnasium where members of the community where invited to not only view their crafts, but also had the chance to purchase them.

"It is a tradition," Sunnyside Intermediate School Principal Carmen Lunak said. "The students will count up the money, discuss donations, vote and then donate to a worthy cause."

Sunnyside fifth-grader Nevaeh Layton sold bags made out of old T-shirts because she said her and her family for Christmas every year go through their closets, to find old T-shirts to make bags then donate them.

She added that she has been making the bags since she was in second grade.

"We thought it would be cool to do it at the Trade Fair this year," Layton said. "I like the opportunity to sell things and have a chance to know people better with our things."

Sunnyside fifth-grader Kay Terry sold brownie mix made with flour, cocoa, sugar and two types of chocolate chips for $3.

He said what he enjoyed about the trade fair is that he gets to interact and talk with someone about what he's selling.

"(I chose brownie mix)  because most people, in the winter time around Christmas, make brownies for their families, " Terry said.

Sunnyside fifth-grader Aspen Parker sold stress balls filled with slime, dough and o beads.

"(I like that) I get to make my own things and sell them," she said.

Lunak said in years past, the students have donated to organizations like the Sletten Cancer Center and Shriners Hospitals.

"It is absolutely one of my favorite school events because the students are creative builders who get to practice people skills as they sell their treasures," she said. "They learn so much from the process. In the end of it all, they can feel good about donations made to worthy causes."

This year's amount collected has yet to be counted and the charity hasn't been chosen yet.
