St. Jude's school holding holiday food drive

St. Jude Thaddeus School is inviting people to help its students help local people in need.

The school’s annual Advent Food Drive started Monday and will run through Wednesday, Dec. 18.

  Principal Mike Haugen said that at the school they put the different grades together to create four teams with the common goal to see if each team can raise 120 pounds of food daily.

“We have four families we collect for and so our deacon, Tim Maroney, finds the families for us,” Haugen said.

He added that Maroney helps collect the food, as well, and any food left over will go to the Havre Food Bank.

Last year, Haugen said all four teams collectively brought in over 200 pounds of food daily, so by the end of the drive the school had collected 1,100 pounds of food.

“We are looking to beat that,” he said. 

Starting today, at the end of each school day the food will be weighed and then announced in the next day’s morning announcements at school, he added, to see how the teams are doing.

After next Wednesday, St. Jude Thaddeus School student council will divide the food up between four families in need of assistance and any remaining food will be donated to Havre Food Bank.

People interested in donating items to the drive can drop them off at the schoo at 430 Seventh Ave.
