Montana Cattlemen’s Association will host its 18th annual Cattlemen’s Day Saturday, Dec. 7, at the YOGO Inn in Lewistown beginning at 9 a.m.
Starting off the program, Jim Larson will discuss the Montana State Fund Safety Program. Morning speakers include a panel discussion of the Phillips County Bison Ordinance Variance with representatives from the American Prairie Reserve, Phillips County Conservation District, and the Phillips County Grazing Herd District. Following the panel debate, Karoline Rose of KRose Cattle Company will address the current condition of the cattle market.
After the lunch break, Montana State Veterinarian Marty Zaluski and Montana Department of Livestock Executive Officer Mike Honeycutt will review the new rules regarding beef cattle identification that take effect Jan. 1, and how the transition to RFID tags affect Montana producers. Montana Beef Council Executive Director Chaley Harney is slated to describe how people’s checkoff dollars are being spent.
Also, in the afternoon, Gilles Stockton, MCA director, will give an update on the status of the Montana COOL legislation. A representative from the Montana Weed Control Association, Jasmine Reimer, will provide a presentation on identification and management of invasive grasses and noxious weeds.
MCA will have its annual business meeting later in the afternoon. MCA President Jim Baker said, “The business meeting is where our members bring their concerns and help us establish directives for the upcoming year. Above all else we value the input of our membership.” During the meeting, MCA policy and resolutions will be discussed as well as nominations for district directors and officer elections.
Cattlemen’s Day is open to the public and there is no registration fee. An optional roast beef lunch for $20 and barbecue dinner for $30 is available. The Boone Country Band will be the featured entertainment following dinner.
