Among its other assistance, Job Service-Havre offers a five-part series of free workshops in a weekly rotation throughout the year aimed at help people find, apply for and start a job.
The workshops — such as this week’s, “Success on the Job — are held from 9 a.m. to noon on Thursdays.
“(In) career planning we are working really hard with our seeker customers to help them come up with a plan, not just I need a job, but what do you want to do, what have you done, what skills are transferable, and so it’s not just come in and look for jobs,” Job Service-Havre manager Carol Lamey said.
The next workshop will be Thursday, Nov. 7, focusing on “Starting the Job Search,” followed by the Nov. 14, workshop on “Job Search Techniques,” and the third workshop Nov. 21, “Writing Effective Resumes.” There will be no workshop the last Thursday of the month because it falls on Thanksgiving.
The other workshop, which will be scheduled in December, is “Interviewing with Confidence.”
“Job Service Montana offices are part of a statewide network of workforce development centers that collaborate with community partners to provide customer focused employment and training opportunities,” says a handout from Job Service-Montana.
“There is 11 computers people can use and printers, and we fax, copy, scan and whatever people might need,” Lamey said.
She added that Job Service-Havre can help with all applications and interviewing, as well.
“Most people do not practice interviewing. It’s a skill. It’s like anything else; the more you do it the more comfortable you are going to feel with it and the better you are going to do,” she said. “Get comfortable talking to people, it’s just a conversation, but you still got to be able to answer those questions and be prepared.”
She said they practice mock interviews with people, and she said she always tells people that if they practice and they are comfortable with questions from employers, they can answer comfortably.
“I say, ‘your brain smiles,’ because you know what you’re doing, and relaxes and you’ll do OK,” she said.
Lamey added that a big thing that Job Service-Havre does is work with businesses, handling their recruiting needs and talking with them on what the labor market is, as well as what is going on with their businesses or why they are having a hard time finding people.
Lamey said Job Service-Havre can provide resources for anyone in Hill, Blaine and Liberty counties, along with working with Havre High School, Montana State University-Northern and more.
“We are employment in training, so any aspect of employment in training, either for seekers or businesses, we’ve got our fingers in it,” she said. “If I don’t know the answer, I can find it.”
The handout also lists employment resources that include career planning, resume and cover letter assistance, application assistance, interview assistance, work-based learning, financial support and unemployment insurance assistance.
