George Ferguson Column: It sure was nice to be at a game where weather wasn't the story

From The Fringe...

I can’t lie, it was weird being back inside Blue Pony Stadium on Saturday.

It was weird because, I felt like I hadn’t covered or watched a football game in there in a long, long time.

But most of all, it was weird because, the last time any of us were in there, it was about as bad of weather as I’ve ever seen at a game there, and, the weird thing was, it was only the end of September.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not trying to drudge up that day last month for anything. It was ugly, all the way around. Funny thing is though, throughout Saturday’s game between the Lights and Rocky Mountain College Battlin’ Bears, I can’t tell you how many times somebody said: At least it’s not like that last home game.”

There’s a reason for that. A lot of us are getting a little nervy when it comes to these winter storms that keep blasting us the last couple years.

I know I’m pretty jumpy about them, and I have to admit, I didn’t think I’d have to tough one out, in all of my cold weather gear, at a Northern football game, before Oct. 1.

But I’ve had to now, and while I’d like to say that I’ve about seen it all when it comes to weather in Havre, I’m not going to say that, because I’m sure I haven’t. I’m sure, at some point, I’ll have to endureworse.

That however, is why I appreciated Saturday. It was pretty darn nice out there, and it was pretty much what we, as football fans, want when it comes to game day weather.

Oh, I was cold. But I’m always cold, so that didn’t mean it wasn’t beautiful outside, and while I was chilly, I still appreciated it.

After all, I’ve been to a rainy Blue Pony game in August, a snowy Northern game in September, and a really rainy Griz game just two weeks ago. So, I haven’t had the greatest of football weather just yet.

That is, until Saturday. It was pretty much picture-perfect football weather, and now, with November right around the corner, I have to ask, was that the only picture-perfect weather game I’ll cover this year?

Who knows, but it’s Havre so that’s highly likely. For now though, I’ll relish in the fact that, at least for one damn Saturday this fall, the weather cooperated. And it made it a lot of fun to be at a college football game.
