Festival Days weekend is fast approaching, with some new events, the highlight of the festival, the parade, set for 10 a.m. Saturday, and some related events starting before the weekend.
The parade is a posthumous tribute to Havre businessman Scott Young, who owned and operated Norman’s Ranch and Sportswear with his wife, Kaye.
Young, a tremendous supporter of youth and events in the community who died unexpectedly July 25 at age 69, is the grand marshall of Saturday’s parade. Kaye Young and other family members will ride in the grand marshall car in his place.
The parade leaves the Havre High School parking lot at 10 a.m, with the float judging taking place prior to the parade.
The parade again includes a Furry Friends Paw Parade, organized this year by Havre Dog Park Club. Pet owners are asked to gather at the Paw Parade float at the high school at 9 a.m. with judging for that starting at 9:15 a.m.
A new event — kind of a revival of a Festival Days event in the 1980s — starts just before the parade with the Court Appointed Special Advocates Fifth Avenue Mile starting from Spud’s Grub Hut at 9:50 a.m.
The run is intended to raise awareness of CASA, whose volunteers advocate for children who have been abused or neglected and are in the court system through no fault of their own.
The format is reminiscent of the MADD Mile Dash to raise awareness of drunk driving that was held during Festival Days in the ’80s.
Onsite registration starts at 9 a.m. at Spud’s Grub Hut.
But events start earlier in the week, with Friends of the Hill County Library holding their annual book sale Wednesday through Sunday, with the sale starting Wednesday at noon at the library.
Another event starts Thursday, with quilts made from Anka’s Treasures designs demonstrations of the quilting processes in Anka’s Treasures Trunk Show Thursday in Bearly Square Quilting at 109 First St. West through Saturday at Bearly Square Quilting during store hours and continuing Friday and Saturday.
Events get into full swing Friday with the annual Festival of Quilts at the Havre Holiday Village, a burger feed put on by the Havre Eagles Auxiliary, a street dance in between the Eagles and Old Station Brewing Co., the Steve Heil Memorial Car Show, the start of the 48-Hour Softball Tournament, and the first day of Montana State University-Northern rodeo.
And they continue Saturday and Sunday with new and returning events including the annual Kiwanis Pancake Feed, Sight-In Days at the Hill County Shooting Sports Range, the Run of Special Trains at the Frank DeRosa Railroad Museum, and more.
Commemorative buttons have been on sale, with drawings starting this week. The Havre Daily News is posting the winning numbers each day, and will list all of the week’s winners along with the results of the Friday drawing.
Commemorative mugs also are for sale.
