The Havre High volleyball team had a heated home game against the CMR Rustlers Tuesday in the Havre High Gymnasium. But even with hard work and unflinching spirit the Ponies had, they fell to the Rustlers 3-0.
Despite the 3-0 sweep Havre suffered, the club did not allow CMR to get it easily.
Head coach Tamecia Jarvis knows that the match was a difficult one but had some positive takeaways at times.
"There was lots of things that went well for us at times," said Jarvis. "It's just the consistency of keeping those things going."
CMR started off the first set with the first score. Havre responded with a 3-0 run, putting them in the lead 3-1. After some traded points, the Ponies went on a 4-0 run and quickly took off on a 7-0 run to respond to a Rustlers' score.
The next series of volleys became a back-and-forth battle between the teams. Havre would score and run and CMR responded with scores and runs of their own.
The score settled at 20-20 for a bit and the teams then went at another intense battle. In the end of the first set, the Rustlers claimed the win.
The second set for the Ponies was as heated as the first. The teams dueled it out to open the set, Havre behind. The Blue Ponies stepped up and went on a 6-0 run to thin CMR's lead. Havre followed with even more runs. 4-0 and 6-0 runs gave the Ponies a lead of 15-13.
Once again, another slugfest between the teams ensued. Both clubs would go on short runs and exchanged kills. Havre relinquished the lead and the Rustlers added another game to the win column, leading the Blue Ponies 2-0.
Jarvis knew the main struggle the team faced in the match against CMR and knew her club could beat them but fell short.
"We had the opportunity a couple times to do that," said Jarvis. "We're going to have to work on finishing."
Jarvis' observation proved itself to be an obstacle in the third set for the Ponies. The team fought hard once again, going on a 5-0 run early in the match. Havre lead multiple times throughout the shootout, but CMR rose back up and finished the Blue Ponies with an 8-0 run.
The Rustlers grabbed the last set win they needed to go 3-0 in the match. Havre would give it everything but lagged behind in the end.
Even with the loss, the Blue Ponies had many players shine throughout the night. Senior Cassidy Acor led the team with 10 kills and three blocks. Senior Sam Oliver made 17 digs, giving the team an edge multiple times during the match. Senior Peyton Brown ended the match with 18 assists and senior Kinsey Adkins had two aces.
Overall, Havre totaled 24 kills, 19 assists, 36 digs, eight blocks, and four aces. The Ponies did not give CMR the easiest win.
CMR head coach Patrick Hiller knew the Ponies would be a tough team to face.
"It was fun coming to this gym (Havre High Gymnasium)," said Hiller. "This gym wins a lot of matches. You never think it's going to be easy at all against these guys."
Tuesday's matchup will not be the last time Havre plays a Class AA school. In fact, the Ponies head to Great Falls this Friday and Saturday for a tournament packed with AA schools.
The Electric City Classis at both Great Falls High and CMR High will be a highly competitive atmosphere. Class AA schools from around the state will be there and will be hungry for wins.
Havre has an intense weekend ahead of it. The Blue Ponies will look to give the Class AA clubs a good set of matches and come out of the tournament with a win. It will not be easy, but Havre is a competitive, tough team and will be giving every match their all.
The Ponies will play their pool play at Great Falls High. Havre opens the morning against Billings West at 10 a.m. Then, the club will play Billings Skyview at 11:30. The Ponies then play Butte at 1:30 p.m. and move on to go against Helena High at 2:50.
The team's afternoon continues against Great Falls at 4:10 p.m. Havre then plays the last pool match against Flathead at 5:30 p.m.
The championship tournament then kicks off Saturday morning at 9 at Great Falls High. The consolation bracket will be held at the same time at CMR.
