The Havre High volleyball team has been excited all week to make its home debut. But before the Blue Ponies get to Saturday's home-opener with Browning, they had to take on Class AA foe, Great Falls High.
And, showing just how much potential they have this season, the Ponies went to Great Falls Thursday and defeated the Bison in four games.
Head coach Tamecia Jarvis' club stormed back after losing the first set to the Bison, 18-25, winning three straight games to pull off an outstanding road win.
While no stats were reported, Havre defeated the Bison by scores of 18-25, 25-14, 25-22 and 25-23. It was an excellent first win of the season for the Ponies, who will take their 1-0 record into Saturday afternoon's home debut against Browning.
"I think it's going to be great for our girls," Jarvis said of Saturday's matchup with the Indians. "I think their excited to showcase what they have."
While Havre was playing Great Falls High on Thursday, the Blue Pony golf teams were wrapping up a fun day at the Jawbone Country Club in Harlowtown.
Havre, of head coach George Ferguson, was in Harlowtown to face Lewistown and Livingston in a singles match-play format, and, on the day, the Blue Pony boys came away with eight wins overall.
However, no matter the win-loss record in Harlowtown, Ferguson said, the day was a great one for his Ponies.
"There were a lot of reasons why the match-play day was fun," Ferguson said. "First, we took all of our kids, varsity and JV, so everyone in our program that went got to play 18 holes, and playing golf is the most important thing for all of them right now. Secondly, it was a different format than we're used to playing, and I think, not only do the kids have a blast playing match play, but, it's a format that helps them focus on one hole at a time, and not worry so much about what they might shoot. I think that's big for them, and I think it will really help our kids down the road.
"Not to mention," Ferguson continued, "the weather was awesome, and that course is really cool. I had never seen that course before, and I thought it was just such a cool track, and one I know all of our kids enjoyed playing on. So, it was a fun day, and a productive one for our kids, and I think they'll all be better for having played down there."
Havre's varsity season continues with next Friday's Sidney Invitational, while the Blue Pony JV team will host the Havre JV Invite the same day at Beaver Creek Golf Course.
The HHS volleyball team meanwhile, makes its home debut Saturday against Browning, starting at around 4 p.m. in the HHS gymnasium.
