Blue Pony standout making a name for himself in the trenches
In football, it's key to make plays and capitalize on every opportunity you get on both sides of the ball. Whether it's running the ball, throwing a touchdown, sacking the quarterback, or intercepting the ball, the game is fueled by these pivotal moments.
But a good team also has something else important. Something so critical to a game that without it, the game and its players would struggle. The position is overlooked but appreciated with needed most - the linemen.
Linemen are in a position that gives them a simple guide. If it's an offensive lineman, their goal is to protect the quarterback and open space for running and passing plays. If it's the defensive side of the ball, they aim to get the QB, get the ball, stop runs, and give that offensive line something to fear.
Both types of linemen matter and the Blue Ponies have some great players representing their line on both sides. But one lineman has stood out this season and has shown incredible skill at his disposal, a senior who gives it 100 percent every game he goes into - Havre High senior Dexter Beck.
Beck has played football since fourth grade, along with a mix of flag football before that. His love for the game certainly hasn't worn off and has made him quite the lineman to watch.
Beck has a lot to look forward to this season and having a good game at Sidney, despite the loss, has kept Beck ready to play Glendive tonight.
"I think we got a bad taste from last week and Sidney got away with one on us," says Beck. "But we're gonna get one here against Glendive."
Beck's mindset and goals each week has helped him grow as a player every time he steps on the field. He wants to win every week and he wants to go to the playoffs and dominate at state. On top of that, Beck has a motivator when he's on the field.
"Watching our guys running into the endzone," Beck answered when asked about what keeps him motivated as a lineman.
It's no surprise, linemen are as important to those plays as the player who runs it in or catches the pass. Beck has shown he can show up and play a great game, no matter what side of the ball he is on.
Havre High head coach Ryan Gatch enjoys watching Beck play on the field.
"Dexter is a fantastic young man," says Gatch. "He's a guy that balances school, work and social life. He's great. He's an epitome of what you talk about in Blue Pony football."
Gatch also praises Beck's representation of his family, community, school and football team in a positive light.
Beck, his team and his coaches are all raring and ready to go to put on a show for the fans. Beck will be a player to watch when the Blue Ponies defend the home turf against the Glendive Red Devils tonight at 7 inside Blue Pony Stadium.
