The 2019 high school volleyball season opened with most preseason tournaments around the state last week. However, there was already one big rivalry match.
Last Friday night, the Fort Benton Longhorns and Chinook Sugarbeeters hooped up in a season-opening match in Chinook. The two Northern C rivals battled it out for four sets with the Longhorns winning by scores of 21-25, 25-17, 25-18 and 25-15. Fort Benton got 15 kills from Mackenzie Clark, while Hailey Bell had five kills for the Sugarbeeters.
North Star also swept Hays-Lodge Pole in a pair of 6C East matches in Havre Saturday.
There was plenty of action on Saturday at tournaments and jamborees all around the area.
Chinook, Harlem and Rocky Boy were all in action at last Saturday's Malta Invitational, with many other area Class B schools in attendance. North Star, Box Elder and Big Sandy were in action at the Belt Invitational, while the Chester-Joplin-Inverness Hawks were part of the Sunburst Showcase. No scores were reported from any of those tournaments, however.
Conference matches start with more frequency this week, but there will also be plenty of action in preseason tournaments again this weekend, including in Chinook.
The Chinook Invitational will be held Friday and Saturday at the Chinook High School gymnasium. The tournament will feature two pools Friday. In Pool A, Chinook, Malta, Highwood/Geraldine, Valier and Shelby will compete, while CJI, Glasgow, Tri-Cities, Cut bank and Simms will play in the other pool. Saturday, the action will shift to a winner's bracket and a consolation bracket.
