Local Golf Report: Jeremy Jensen lighting it up on the course

From Tee to Green

It's been a fun last couple of weeks for former Havre High and Montana State University-Northern golfer Jeremy Jensen. Of course, as good of a golfer as Jensen is, every summer on the links is a fun one.

However, the last couple of weeks have been especially exciting for Jensen.

First, Jensen was part of the brainchild of the new Youth Golf League in Havre. The league is open to boys and girls entering grades 6-9 and is a spin on the USGA's Operation 36, which is a golf league designed to teach youth golfers to shoot a score of 36 in nine holes from various distances.

The Havre Youth Golf League, which has been held every Tuesday morning at Prairie Farms Golf Course, is similar. The golfers get an hour of instruction from Jensen, then head out on the course to play nine holes.

And it's been a hit. The league this year was open to 15 golfers and has been full every morning since it began earlier this month.

Of course, Jensen's instruction is a big part of the league, but, he has also found time to shoot some stellar scores of his own, and last Tuesday night, he had one of the best rounds of a stellar golf career.

In men's golf league at Prairie Farms, Jensen fired a 7-under par 29. He tallied five birdies, an eagle on the Par-4 ninth hole and three pars. The round was a stellar day for Jensen, who also shot a 35 on the font nine earlier in the day. That round equaled an 18-hole 64, which tied the Prairie Farms course record Jensen already owns.

So, congrats, Jeremy. Great shooting, and I'm sure your hot streak will keep going.

Last Tuesday night in men's league also saw Tire Rama sizzle with 24.5 points for high team. Jensen, his dad Jeff, Buzz Pizzini and Lunar Evans made up the winning team. Nate Baltrusch also netted a 31 for low net.

Last Wednesday night was a completely different story than Tuesday. With a west wind howling at 30 mph and gusts over 50, good scoring on Prairie Farm's back nine was hard to come by. Jensen and Jimmy Kato each were low gross with a 39, while yours truly was low net with a 34. My squad, Korb Construction, also won high-team honors with 21.5 points. The team is composed of myself, Scott Miller, Mason Sheppard and Mike Kellam.

Thursday night, women's league was back on at Prairie Farms after taking a week off for the Women's State AM. Sarah Spangler was low gross with a 43, while Peggy Lamb was low net at 32. DA Davidson was high team with 23.5 points. The team was composed of Patsy Divish, Karla Bolken, Mel Zuidema and Teagan Fee.

And speaking of the Women's State AM, congrats to our local ladies who participated in the Women's Senior AM. Julie Mariani took 26th, Teresa Brown was 27th, Patti Nault T39 and Carol Clup was 46th. Great job, ladies.

Chinookl's Troy Azure also participated in last week's Montana Men's State AM at Meadowlark Country Club.
